Lead Engineering Excellence. Enhance the Student Experience.

At Sodexo, we believe that every role has the power to improve daily life. We're looking for an experienced and inspiring Engineering Team Leader to join our Technical Services team at Northumbria University, leading the delivery of outstanding Hard FM services across a diverse student accommodation portfolio.

If you're an experienced engineering professional with a passion for leadership, compliance and customer service, we'd love to hear from you.

About the Role

This is an exciting opportunity for a technically strong engineering professional with leadership experience to play a pivotal role in maintaining and enhancing the environments where thousands of students live, study and thrive.

As a hands-on leader, you'll oversee the safe and efficient operation of critical building services, drive compliance and performance, and lead a dedicated team of engineers to deliver a sector-leading maintenance service. In return, you'll join a global organisation committed to investing in its people, supporting career progression and creating a positive impact for customers, clients and communities.

As Engineering Team Leader, you'll be responsible for leading the day-to-day delivery of planned, reactive and corrective maintenance services across the University estate.

This role requires flexibility to support key student move-in and move-out periods, particularly during June and September, when delivering an exceptional student experience is critical. The successful candidate will also be expected to undertake Authorised Person responsibilities relevant to their discipline, with training provided where required.

  • Leading, motivating and developing a team of engineers, handypersons and compliance operatives.
  • Managing the delivery of planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities across residential and communal buildings.
  • Providing technical leadership across electrical, mechanical and building services systems.
  • Supporting the safe operation, compliance and reliability of all engineering assets.
  • Monitoring performance against contractual KPIs, SLAs and compliance requirements.
  • Managing resource allocation, labour deployment and materials to ensure efficient service delivery.
  • Coordinating specialist contractors and reviewing completed works to ensure quality standards are achieved.
  • Maintaining accurate asset, maintenance and compliance records through CAFM systems, including Maximo.
  • Supporting lifecycle planning, refurbishment projects and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Developing strong relationships with University stakeholders, accommodation teams, contractors and colleagues.
  • Producing performance reports and supporting client reporting requirements.
  • Participating in the call-out rota to support the University's 24/7 operational requirements.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Qualifications & Experience

  • Time-served Electrical or Mechanical apprenticeship with HND, NVQ Level 3 or equivalent qualification in a relevant discipline.
  • Minimum five years' experience within building services, facilities management or plant engineering environments.
  • Previous experience managing and developing engineering teams.
  • Strong technical knowledge of electrical, mechanical and building services systems.
  • Experience within a Total Facilities Management (TFM) or Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) environment.
  • Experience working with CAFM/CMMS systems, ideally Maximo.
  • Knowledge of planned preventative maintenance methodologies, including SFG20/SFG30.
  • Understanding of statutory compliance, engineering regulations and safe systems of work.
  • Experience supporting internal and external compliance audits.
  • Strong stakeholder management and client-facing experience.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

  • Previous Authorised Person (AP) experience in disciplines such as LV, Mechanical Services, Boiler & Pressure Systems or Confined Spaces.
