About the role

General Vocational Trades Instructor

Location:

HMP Addiewell, West Lothian
Company: Sodexo Government Services

Are you passionate about teaching practical skills and helping people build a better future?

HMP Addiewell is a high‑security establishment focused on helping individuals change the direction of their lives. We prioritise addressing offending behaviour through targeted programmes and close work with professionals, while providing education, training and employment opportunities that build practical skills. We also work with community partners to support positive futures after release.

We're looking for a General Vocational Trades Instructor to join our Learning & Skills team at HMP Addiewell. In this rewarding role, you'll deliver engaging vocational training, helping learners gain recognised qualifications and develop the practical and transferable skills needed to support successful rehabilitation and future employment.

Every day offers the opportunity to make a genuine impact by encouraging learners from diverse backgrounds to build confidence, develop independence and take positive steps towards a brighter future.

Sodexo has a culture built on three hallmarks: Be Positive, Be Courageous and Be the Difference. We encourage people to be positive by creating hope and respect in every interaction, to be courageous by safely challenging behaviours that don’t support a positive environment, and to be the difference by taking actions that improve outcomes for those we support.

By living these hallmarks each day, you help build routines, rituals and behaviours that show what good looks like. You recognise and encourage the right actions, and you lead with intention - knowing every moment of connection counts.

Main Responsibilities

You'll deliver engaging, practical training across a variety of vocational areas, including:

  • Manufacturing
  • Fabric and Textile Work
  • Industrial Cleaning
  • Sleep Pod Production
  • Traditional trades and industry work parties
  • Other vocational programmes as required

Working with learners at different stages of their educational journey, you'll create an inclusive and supportive environment that builds confidence, develops practical and transferable skills, and encourages positive engagement with learning.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver engaging vocational training programmes.
  • Prepare lesson plans, schemes of work and learning resources.
  • Assess learner progress and maintain accurate educational records.
  • Prepare learners for internal and external qualifications where appropriate.
  • Monitor attendance, achievement and progression.
  • Support prisoners in developing transferable employability and life skills.
  • Encourage participation and actively recruit learners into education programmes.
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues, prison staff and awarding organisations.
  • Maintain quality standards, inventory records and tool control procedures.
  • Ensure compliance with teaching, assessment and quality assurance requirements.
  • Contribute to course reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Help learners prepare for further education, employment and successful reintegration into the community.

You'll ideally have:

  • Experience delivering training, teaching, coaching or mentoring.
  • A recognised teaching qualification at SCQF Level 7 (or equivalent), or a willingness to achieve this within 18 months.
  • Experience in vocational trades, manufacturing, industrial environments or practical skills training.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organisational and planning abilities.
  • The ability to adapt your teaching style to suit different learning needs.
  • Good IT skills.
