We're looking for an Engineering Lead to take ownership of Hard FM operations across a vibrant university environment, ensuring thousands of students, staff, and visitors enjoy safe, reliable, and high-performing facilities every day.

This is an exciting opportunity to lead a skilled team, influence operational excellence, and play a key role in shaping the future of a dynamic campus estate.

About the Role

As Engineering Lead, you will be responsible for leading the delivery of Hard Facilities Management services across the university's academic buildings and student accommodation portfolio. You'll manage a team of engineers and technical specialists, ensuring statutory compliance, service excellence, and the safe operation of critical building systems.

Working closely with the Facilities & Workplace Experience Manager, you'll drive performance, develop your team, maintain audit readiness, and ensure all planned and reactive maintenance activities are delivered to the highest standards.

This is an opportunity to make a visible impact across a prestigious university campus while developing your career within a supportive and progressive environment.

If you're an experienced engineering leader who thrives on delivering operational excellence, developing high-performing teams and ensuring compliance in a complex facilities environment, we'd love to hear from you.

Leadership & People Management

  • Lead, motivate and develop a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Manage performance, absence, training, development and employee engagement.
  • Conduct appraisals, probation reviews and regular team meetings.
  • Promote a positive health, safety and service culture.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and workforce planning activities.

Engineering & Compliance

  • Oversee the safe operation, maintenance and repair of all mechanical and electrical building services.
  • Ensure all statutory inspections, compliance requirements and maintenance programmes are completed on time.
  • Maintain accurate records, logbooks and asset information.
  • Manage Risk Assessments, Safe Systems of Work and Permit to Work processes.
  • Ensure the campus remains audit-ready at all times.

Service Delivery Excellence

  • Drive the completion of all planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Monitor contract performance against KPIs and service standards.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Manage contractors and supplier performance to ensure quality and value.
  • Use performance data and reporting tools to enhance service delivery.

Stakeholder Management

  • Build strong relationships with university stakeholders, colleagues and contractors.
  • Respond proactively to service issues and identify practical solutions.
  • Support the delivery of an exceptional workplace and campus experience.

What We’re Looking For

Essential Experience & Qualifications

  • Recognised qualification in Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Building Services or a related engineering discipline.
  • Strong technical knowledge of building services and Hard FM operations.
  • Minimum 2 years' experience managing teams within a facilities, engineering, TFM or IFM environment.
  • Sound understanding of statutory compliance, health & safety legislation and engineering best practice.
  • Experience preparing for and supporting internal and external audits.
  • Strong knowledge of safe systems of work, permits to work and risk assessments.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office and FM management systems.
  • Experience producing performance reports and presenting operational data.

You'll Also Be
