Waste and Porterage Manager

Location: HM Naval Base Portsmouth, Hampshire

Join Sodexo and play a key role in delivering essential waste management and porterage services at HM Naval Base Portsmouth. This is an excellent opportunity for an organised, proactive manager who can lead a team, maintain high service standards and ensure day-to-day operations run safely and efficiently.

Working within our Government & Agencies team, you’ll oversee a range of waste collection services alongside porterage activities, including the movement of equipment and marquees. You’ll help ensure our services meet the needs of the site, our customers and our client while identifying opportunities to improve efficiency and performance.

What you’ll do:

• Manage daily waste operations, overseeing the collection of catering waste, recycling, garden waste, bulky waste and commercial waste.

• Lead and support your team, ensuring staff, vehicles and resources are deployed effectively to deliver a reliable, high-quality service.

• Oversee porterage services, coordinating the safe and efficient movement of equipment, marquees and other items as required.

• Maintain health, safety and compliance standards, ensuring all activities follow company procedures, site regulations and safe systems of work.

• Drive service excellence, monitoring performance, maintaining clean and organised work areas, and resolving operational issues promptly.

• Support team development, delivering team briefings, training and competency checks to promote safe working and strong performance.

• Manage resources effectively, including equipment, supplies, payroll and stock, helping to control costs and improve productivity.

• Build positive relationships with customers, stakeholders and the client, responding to concerns and ensuring service needs are met.

What you bring:

• Previous experience working within waste management and porterage operations.

• A full, clean driving licence.

• Strong communication and organisational skills, with good attention to detail.

• The ability to work independently, use your initiative and manage competing priorities.

• A proactive approach to health and safety, compliance and maintaining high standards.

• The ability to work collaboratively and deliver excellent customer service.

It would be great if you also have

• Experience managing or supervising a team.

• Previous experience working within a military environment.

• Knowledge or qualifications in health and safety and food safety.

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook.

• Experience identifying operational improvements and implementing more efficient ways of working.
