The Decontamination Technician plays a vital role within the hospital team by supporting the shared values of Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. Working on critical decontamination equipment, the technician helps ensure sterilisers, washer disinfectors, water treatment systems and associated plant remain safe, reliable and compliant for clinical use, directly supporting patient safety.
Working closely with Sterile Services, Estates, contractors and clinical teams, the technician contributes to continuous improvement, regulatory compliance and the safe delivery of healthcare services.
n this crucial role, you will support the operation, maintenance, testing and validation of critical decontamination equipment and associated engineering plant across Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with practical engineering or maintenance skills, a keen eye for detail, and a commitment to delivering safe, efficient and compliant decontamination services that directly support patient care.
The role requires a methodical approach and a strong attention to detail, assisting with planned preventative maintenance, weekly validation testing, fault finding, repairs and performance verification of sterilisers, washer disinfectors, water treatment systems and associated plant. Throughout your training, you will develop knowledge and practical skills across a range of engineering disciplines, including mechanical systems, electrical and control systems, water chemistry, steam quality, and decontamination validation, while working in accordance with HTM guidance, relevant British Standards and Trust procedures.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a proactive mindset, a strong work ethic and a genuine interest in engineering. As part of the trainee programme, you will work towards the Building Services Engineering Service and Maintenance Engineer Level 3 apprenticeship/qualification at college, alongside structured workplace training and mentoring, providing the knowledge, skills and experience required to progress towards becoming a Competent Person (CP) within the decontamination engineering team.
