Are you an experienced Health & Safety professional looking for an opportunity to take ownership, influence senior leaders and make a meaningful difference?

Join Sodexo Justice as a Health & Safety Manager at HMP Altcourse, where your expertise will help protect colleagues, residents and visitors while supporting a safe environment for rehabilitation.

Working closely with the Prison Director, operational managers and our wider Safety & Risk team, you’ll turn safety priorities into practical action. You’ll strengthen standards, develop people’s confidence and drive lasting improvements across health and safety, fire safety, food safety and wellbeing.

About HMP Altcourse

HMP Altcourse serves the courts of Merseyside and the wider North West, maintaining strong community links with a clear focus on rehabilitation and resettlement.

We provide high-quality services that support individuals to make positive changes, offering a wide range of education, training and work opportunities to help residents develop practical, work-ready skills. Our commitment to reducing reoffending continues beyond custody through community partnerships that support people on release.

The prison includes multiple residential units, a healthcare centre, gym, library, workshops, visits hall, chaplaincy and kitchen. This varied operational environment offers an opportunity to apply your expertise across a broad range of safety challenges.

What you’ll do

  • Provide visible safety leadership through regular safety tours, inspections and practical guidance to operational teams.
  • Drive effective incident investigations, overseeing root-cause analysis and leading investigations into serious or high-risk incidents.
  • Strengthen risk management, supporting teams to maintain robust risk assessments, control measures and safe systems of work.
  • Support fire safety compliance, ensuring assessments, inspections, testing and audit actions are completed.
  • Work with catering and facilities teams to maintain food safety standards and effective contractor safety checks.
  • Build a proactive safety culture through coaching, training and toolbox talks that help colleagues understand and manage risks.
  • Turn insight into improvement, analysing performance trends, reporting progress and ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Support audits and maintain ISO certifications, working with leaders to strengthen compliance and assurance.

You’ll also collaborate with colleagues across other Sodexo Justice sites, with travel required when needed.

What you’ll bring

You’ll combine strong technical knowledge with a practical approach, building trusted relationships and influencing positive change in a complex operational environment.

Essential requirements:

  • A NEBOSH Level 6 Diploma or NVQ Level 6 Diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in a similar Health & Safety role.
  • Professional membership at GradIOSH/CertIOSH level or membership of IIRSM, with evidence of ongoing continuing professional development (CPD).
  • Strong investigation and continuous improvement skills.
  • Experience implementing and reviewing safety management systems.
  • Experience delivering safety training and supporting internal and external audits.
  • Excellent planning, organisational, communication and influencing skills.
  • The ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and manage competing priorities.
  • Willingness and ability to travel between sites as required.

Desirable qualifications and experience

  • Experience in a custodial or Justice environment.
  • A NEBOSH Fire Certificate, Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate or Level 3 Award in Education & Training—or willingness to complete these after probation.
  • An IEMA Certificate or ISO 9001, ISO 14001 or ISO 45001 audit training.

Enhanced vetting is required for this role. Sodexo will facilitate the process, and appointment is subject to successful completion of the required checks.
