Purpose of the role:

Act as Finance Manager for the Soft Services contract at Homerton University Hospital, leading day-to-day financial management for the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust contract and providing clear commercial insight to support financial performance, decision making and contract governance.

To business partner with operational management, service leads and the client on a newly mobilised contract generating over £17m revenue per annum, supporting delivery of the budget, identifying risks and opportunities, and driving improved financial performance.

To support contract performance through financial analysis, costings, ad hoc projects and the identification and negotiation of contract variations.

Main Assignments:

Act as the finance lead for the Homerton Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust contract, supporting the Head of Finance, Operational Managers and senior site management team. This will include:

  • Leading the annual budgeting and quarterly forecasting processes with senior site managers, providing appropriate challenge and support.
  • Supporting a robust forecasting process by identifying risks and opportunities and ensuring action plans are developed to address them.
  • Delivering weekly reporting to the management team.
  • Working with senior site management to deliver accurate monthly accounts that reflect all contract activity, including variations, rechargeable works and major project activity.
  • Reviewing and analysing site performance, providing commentary prior to the declaration of financial results.
  • Ensuring billing is completed in line with the contract mechanisms, with accurate invoice back-up documentation provided to the client to support payment in accordance with contractual terms.
  • Delivering a robust management review and financial control process with the senior site management team.
  • Ensuring the financial control environment is properly implemented, particularly around weekly and monthly trading accounts, stock management and cost control.
  • Working with operational teams to analyse performance trends, risks and opportunities, and supporting agreed actions to improve business performance, including subcontractor cost control, rechargeable costs and labour management.
  • Supporting decision making through clear financial insight, analysis and challenge.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Graduate calibre, with strong technical finance capability and the ability to apply financial insight in a complex operational environment.
  • Experience of providing financial support to complex service contracts, ideally within a multi-service, outsourced or healthcare environment.
  • Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to understand contract mechanisms, identify risks and opportunities, and support margin improvement.
  • Proven ability to deliver accurate financial reporting, forecasting, variance analysis and performance insight to support operational and commercial decision making.
  • Confident business partner with the ability to challenge, influence and support senior stakeholders, operational managers and non-finance colleagues.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with experience of financial modelling, costings and translating data into clear actions.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, work under pressure and meet deadlines while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Pragmatic and resilient approach, with the ability to balance day-to-day contract performance with longer-term improvement opportunities.
  • Fluent English, written and spoken, with the ability to present financial information clearly to a range of audiences.

Desirable:

  • Qualified accountant, or working towards a recognised qualification, such as CIMA, ACA or ACCA.
  • Knowledge of healthcare contracts, Agenda for Change and the financial dynamics of a hospital services environment.
  • Experience of contract mobilisation, change activity or process improvement within a finance or operational environment.
  • Knowledge of systems including EProphit and SAP.
  • Commercial Acumen – understands contract mechanisms, commercial drivers and operational performance, using this insight to protect margin, identify risks and opportunities, and support financially sound decisions.
  • Financial Control and Governance – maintains strong financial discipline through accurate reporting, robust controls, billing integrity, cost control and compliance with contractual requirements.
  • Analysis and Decision Making – uses financial data, variance analysis and modelling to identify trends, diagnose issues and recommend practical actions that improve performance.
  • Relationship Management – builds effective relationships with operational teams, the Head of Finance, senior site management and client representatives, providing constructive challenge, support and insight.
  • Impact and Influence – communicates financial information clearly to non-finance stakeholders, influencing decisions and encouraging accountability for financial and operational performance.
  • Planning and Organisation – manages competing deadlines across reporting, forecasting, billing, client meetings and ad hoc analysis while maintaining accuracy, quality and attention to detail.
  • Resilience and Adaptability – remains effective under pressure, responds positively to changing priorities and supports mobilisation, change activity and continuous improvement.
  • Continuous Improvement – identifies opportunities to improve finance processes, reduce administrative burden and strengthen the quality of decision support provided to the business.
