Responsibilities

  • Review financial statements, internal controls and governance processes to ensure accuracy, transparency and compliance.
  • Scrutinise external audit plans, reports and management responses, offering informed challenge to strengthen audit outcomes.
  • Oversee and contribute to the development and monitoring of the Foundation’s risk registers and mitigation actions.
  • Provide independent advice and recommendations to enhance governance effectiveness and promote a strong control environment.
  • Monitor the implementation of audit recommendations, ensuring timely follow‑through and accountability.
  • Uphold independence, objectivity and integrity in all activities, ensuring alignment with Stop Hunger’s mission and ethical standards.
  • Prepare thoroughly for scheduled meetings and contribute constructively to discussions and decision‑making.
  • Participate in ad hoc consultations related to audit, compliance or governance as required.

Context & Key Challenges

  • Operating within a regulated charity environment governed by Charity Commission expectations, financial reporting standards and Stop Hunger’s internal governance policies.
  • Analysing complex financial information, audit findings and risk data to identify gaps, emerging risks and areas for improvement.
  • Providing independent challenge while maintaining constructive relationships with Trustees, auditors and internal/external stakeholders.
  • Upholding high standards of confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive financial or governance matters.
  • Supporting a strong internal control environment within a small‑charity finance model and dual audit requirements.
  • Balancing operational realities with governance expectations to deliver evidence‑based, transparent recommendations.

Essential

  • Strong financial literacy and understanding of audit processes.
  • Experience in governance, finance, risk management or internal controls.
  • Ability to analyse complex information and provide independent, constructive challenge.
  • High levels of integrity, confidentiality and professional discretion.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the Stop Hunger Foundation.

Desirable

  • Experience working within Charity Commission or not‑for‑profit regulatory environments.
  • Familiarity with dual audit environments or small‑charity finance models.
