We’re looking for a confident, credible Safety & Risk Manager to lead the safety, fire and risk agenda at HMP Northumberland — one of the UK’s largest justice sites.
This is a high-impact role where you’ll work alongside the prison Director and senior leadership team to embed a strong, visible safety culture aligned to our commitment:

You won’t just advise — you’ll influence, challenge and drive real operational improvement.
Acting as the site’s Competent Person for fire and health & safety compliance
Embedding effective governance, risk and compliance frameworks
Leading the integrated BS 9997 fire risk management system and ensuring fire strategies and risk assessments remain robust and compliant
Driving measurable reductions in Lost Time Incidents, RIDDOR events, accidents and fire risks
Supporting Directors and managers with safety tours, investigations, audits and risk reviews
Ensuring incidents are properly reported, investigated and lessons learned are shared
Promoting wellbeing through a proactive “Good Day at Work” approach
Representing Sodexo in regulatory and external forums
You’ll also work closely with the wider Sodexo Justice Safety & Risk and SHEQ teams, contributing to continuous improvement across the UK Justice portfolio.

You’re technically strong but commercially aware. You’re comfortable operating in a regulated, high-profile environment and can influence at senior level without losing operational credibility.
Essential
NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)
Strong leadership and influencing skills
Solid experience in fire, health & safety management systems and incident investigation
Ability to work autonomously and make sound judgements in complex environments
Strong planning, organisation and reporting capability
Willingness to travel across sites where required
Ability to obtain security clearance
Desirable
Chartered membership (IOSH / IIRSM)
Fire Safety qualifications (NEBOSH Fire, PAS 79, BS 9997)
ISO audit training
Experience in custodial, justice or similarly regulated environments
