As a Portering Supervisor at Colchester Hospital and Ipswich Hospital, you will play a key role in supporting the delivery of a high-quality, timely, and efficient portering service. You will help ensure that patients, equipment, and materials are moved safely and appropriately throughout the hospital managing your team with a hands on approach. Your responsibilities will include assisting in the management of portering operations, supporting ward and departmental needs, and providing direction and assistance to patients, staff, and visitors across the site. You’ll also be involved in other support services that contribute to the smooth running of hospital operations.
What you’ll do:
Deploy and supervise the portering team, ensuring effective allocation of duties and prioritisation of urgent requests across the hospital.
Manage staff rotas and attendance, using systems such as Kronos for scheduling and sickness monitoring, including conducting return-to-work interviews.
Ensure accurate use of the Teletracking system, overseeing task management and workflow to maintain service efficiency.
Monitor service quality and compliance, undertaking regular audits and implementing corrective actions where standards are not met.
Train and support new staff, delivering buddy shifts, job skills training, and ongoing competency reviews to ensure consistent performance.
Maintain portering equipment and materials, ensuring proper storage, cleanliness, stock control, and prompt reporting of maintenance issues.
Promote a safe and professional working environment, upholding Health & Safety standards, proper uniform policy, and respectful behaviour toward patients and staff.
Support emergency and security protocols, assisting with fire duties and helicopter landings as directed by the hospital’s emergency procedures.
What you bring:
Experience working in facilities, portering, or support services.
Previous experience leading a team or working in a similar supervisory role.
Good communication skills – able to speak and listen clearly with people at all levels.
Able to follow service rules and policies set by the hospital and client.
Basic understanding of health and safety rules and how to apply them at work.
Willing to complete any training needed for the role.
Always maintains good personal hygiene and a professional appearance.
Desirable
A Level 3 qualification in Management or Team Leading.
