About the Role
Sodexo is seeking a skilled and motivated Plumber / Fitter to join our Facilities Management team at HMP Northumberland. This role requires delivering installation, maintenance, testing, and repair of plumbing and related building services to ensure the smooth operation and upkeep of the prison’s infrastructure.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out inspection, maintenance, examination, testing, and repairs on plumbing, heating, ventilation, and hot/cold water systems.
Read and interpret technical diagrams, manufacturer instructions, and operational documents accurately.
Perform general maintenance tasks and troubleshoot issues using appropriate tools and testing devices.
Repair and replace plumbing fixtures and building services equipment, including some basic electrical components.
Inspect and contribute to improving resident decency standards.
Maintain accurate and timely records of all maintenance and repair work, reporting any defects or substandard equipment.
Escort and collaborate with specialist contractors when required.
Adhere strictly to all relevant trade standards and health and safety policies.
Participate in out-of-hours call-out duties on an on-call rota system.
Work proactively both independently and as part of a wider maintenance team.
Comply with Sodexo policies and procedures to support effective prison operation.
Person Specification
Essential:
Completed a recognised plumbing apprenticeship and obtained relevant trade qualifications.
Strong interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to health and safety.
Ability to work systematically to meet deadlines and complete tasks efficiently.
Physically robust with the ability to crawl, climb, stand for extended periods, and operate power tools safely.
Motivated, enthusiastic, and able to work independently or as part of a team.
Desirable:
Willingness to undertake additional training such as locksmith courses to assist with broader maintenance needs.
Competencies
High standards of workmanship and attention to detail.
Ability to work autonomously and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
Commitment to safety and compliance with regulations and procedures.
Effective time management and organisational skills.
