About the Role

Sodexo Government is seeking a dedicated and proactive Fire Maintenance Operative to join our Facilities Management team at HMP Northumberland. This role plays a vital part in maintaining a safe environment by carrying out essential fire safety maintenance, repairs, and equipment checks throughout the prison estate.

As part of a close-knit and professional facilities team, you will ensure compliance with relevant fire safety regulations and contribute to the continuous safety and operational readiness of the site. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to develop a career in fire safety within a secure and structured environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform low-level fire safety maintenance, repairs, and planned preventative tasks across the site.

  • Carry out checks and servicing on portable fire safety equipment including fire extinguishers, fire blankets, hoses, and automatic fire alarm systems.

  • Clean and maintain in-cell fire ventilation systems and carry out fire smoke testing in accordance with NOMs specifications.

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all fire safety equipment and maintenance activities.

  • Provide expert advice and recommendations on fire safety equipment locations and improvements.

  • Develop and manage site-wide fire safety equipment asset plans.

  • Escort and collaborate with specialist contractors where necessary.

  • Participate in an “on call” rota system for out-of-hours emergencies.

What We’re Looking For

  • A positive, proactive attitude to Health and Safety.

  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work to deadlines.

  • Willingness to undertake training and develop into the Lead Fire Operative role.

  • Comfortable working independently or within a team, often without direct supervision.

  • Familiarity with SFG20 maintenance standards (training provided).

  • A good standard of IT proficiency for updating records and plans.
