Job Introduction

  • Operational management of waste services and waste team on site.
  • Follow waste, environmental and H&S legislation to ensure waste activities are performed in a lawful and compliant manner while maintaining compliance with client specific protocols and SOP’s.
  • Track waste trends, waste data and implement innovations to meet waste objectives and budges

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure activities comply with regulatory obligations:

  • ADR (treaty)
  • Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
  • Ensure waste activities comply with site specific policy and procedure.
  • Management and maintenance of specific contract KPI’s - Maintaining strong client relationships and high levels of satisfaction.
  • Manage waste issues that arise, provide guidance to both the client and onsite waste teams.
  • Manage team performance.
  • Produce a waste plan for site to drive innovation and savings.
  • Management of waste team, responsible for ensuring team members are appropriately trained and competent for their job tasks, including review, update and roll out of applicable risk assessments, COSSHH, client procedures, Sodexo procedures etc.
  • To work in close conjunction with the purchasers’ production departments to ascertain future waste arisings, volumes, and timings for forward forecasting of likely transport and disposal requirements
  • Planning and arranging on site storage of packaged wastes, such wastes to be recorded in readiness for consignment from site
  • Labelling wastes as necessary in compliance with current hazardous waste regulations and road transport regulations with respect to dangerous goods by road etc.
  • Ensure that all sub-contractors / hauliers attend site at the agreed or prescribed time to ensure that no delays or interruptions to the Client’s main business is experienced
  • Ensure that adequate and safe information is given to the sub-contractors / hauliers for the load to be consigned and that the correct tremcards or other emergency instructions are issued. 
  • Ensure that the haulier is displaying the correct hazard warning boards / placards as may be appropriate to the method statement, and conform to the approved method statements, site safety rules etc. as may be required by the client.
  • Ensure that all traffic / waste movements are fully recorded, and records maintained of all waste consignments to and from the Client site -so as to satisfy the Hazardous Waste Regulations requirements for keeping of waste registers (Consignment notes)
  • Arrange for the sampling and analysing wastes as appropriate
  • Informing the purchasers’ representative of any apparent changes to the waste specification which may indicate production problems
  • Procurement and arrangement of transportation
  • To deal efficiently and effectively with any requests / concerns / complaints from client
  • Collection of packaged wastes and co-ordination and assistance with loading of wastes where necessary
  • Make the purchasers’ representative aware of any impending changes to procedures or legislation which may affect waste disposal options in advance of their implementation
  • Sourcing of alternative economic disposal routes for new waste streams
  • Completion of associated COSHH assessments and risk assessments; implementation of suitable control measures and timely review of risk assessments
  • Production of waste reports and provision of key performance indicators (KPIs) and waste movement metrics to management.
  • Carry out duty of care audits as required by the client.
  • Assist in the coordination and control of waste consignments from the TWM sites.
  • Ensure the activities carried out follow the FM/TWM contract.
  • Oversight of activities regarding client H&S policy and the relevant transport and environmental legislation
  • Maintain compliance with clients/Sodexo ISO14001 management system.
  • Track and manage waste teams’ performance.
  • Manage requirements for Effluent Testing and equipment maintenance, including consumables
  • Ensure effective SHE program
  • Relationship Management –employees / supply chain / customers

  • Identify improvements to current SLA’s –providing continuous improvements and cost saving initiatives
  • Drive towards achieving the best position for waste steams on the Waste Hierarchy.
  • Attend client meetings to review performance and improvements.

The Ideal Candidate

  • Experience in the waste management industry and Hazardous Waste Environment or Contract – Essential
  • Demonstrate a strong technical understanding of the waste management.
  • Experience in project management and implementation of new processes.
  • Leadership and people management.
  • Strong relationship building ability and presentation skills.
  • Operational management experience in the waste management industry.
  • Experience of the FM industry.
  • Commercial awareness and IT literacy.
  • Passionate, flexible, trustworthy –self-motivated.
  • Demonstrate an innovative approach to waste management.
  • Experience in effectively managing subcontractors.
  • Prior experience in a regulated environment.
  • Ability to work in a team and as an individual.
  • A positive and constructive approach to problem solving.
  • An inclusive style of leadership that reaches out to every level of the organisation.
  • A strategic business outlook.
  • A strong belief in both the clients and Sodexo’s environmental goals and values.
  • FLT Trained and licenced – desirable
  • Recognised DGSA Qualification -desirable
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely to client on an ongoing basis
  • Ability to prioritise work tasks
  • Have ability to understand and manage customer requirements and expectations
  • A high level of commitment, the ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to work as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Well organised
  • Membership of a relevant professional body i.e., IEMA/CIWM

The successful applicant will be required to undertake a DBS standard check and client specific security screening

Package Description

Competitive salary of £30,000 - £40,000 depending on experience plus pension and flexible benefits scheme.
