Substance Misuse Recovery Worker

Job Introduction

HMP Bronzefield are currently recruiting for a Recovery Worker to support and encourage service users to overcome their substance misuse addictions and reduce their offending behaviour.

HMP/YOI Bronzefield is a closed local prison serving courts across the South of England. Our mission is to deliver quality of life services which make a meaningful difference to women in the criminal justice system by supporting them to change their lives for the better. To achieve this we focus on providing needs-based services and programmes to rehabilitate and improve the well-being of our women.

We house up to 572 women (approximately 14.5% of the national female prison population). The women in our custody have a diverse and complex set of needs and range from mothers and babies, young offenders, life and long term sentenced women, short to mid-term sentenced women, foreign nationals and women on remand.

From April 2023, the healthcare services within Sodexo's prisons will be transitioning to a new service provider.

Role Responsibility

  • Hold a large case load and work with clients from a diverse background who often have very complex needs (including dual diagnosis). To act as their case worker offering one to one support and psychosocial interventions via 1-2-1’s and Group Sessions to help in their rehabilitation process.
  • Forge good working relationships with other services internally and with external agencies outside of the Prison to ensure that service users have an excellent quality of service, continuity of care and to ensure effective joined up working.
  • Contribute towards and adhere to the SJS Recovery Strategy, Drug Supply Reduction Plan and Substance Misuse Agenda.
  • Encourage, motivate and support clients through their Recovery journey.
  • Work alongside, train ,support and develop Recovery Peer Mentors (prisoners).
  • Complete initial screening assessments, comprehensive individual care plans and tailor the Recovery service (via an individual Care Plan) to the needs of your clients.
  • Have a good knowledge of substance misuse and issues surrounding substance misuse. To deliver harm reduction advice including safer injecting, harm minimization, safer sex and blood borne virus to your clients.
  • Use Motivational interviewing techniques and empathic listening skills to help service users with their motivation to change their lives.
  • Facilitate/co-facilitate groups
  • Compile and maintain a high standard of case notes (both in case files and on PNOMIS) and records in accordance with Clinical Governance (secure audit trail) and keep and provide information and statistics in line with SJS requirements (secure audit trail)

The Ideal Candidate

  • Completed Substance Misuse training level 1 or 2 and DANOS modules or equivalent.
  • Experience of delivering group work and holding therapeutic sessions
  • Experience of working with individuals that require psychological support.
  • Enhanced knowledge of drugs, including alcohol, NPS and their effects and of the issues surrounding blood borne viruses and sexual health.
  • Experience of working in the substance misuse field with clients from range of backgrounds
  • Understanding of issues relating to mental health and self-harm
  • Excellent communication skills and motivational interview skills

£23856.48 per annum + recurring £287.75 monthly London Weighting

Post holders will be subjected to an advanced DBS check, a prison security check (level 2) prior to being employed.
