Porter / Waste Operative Opportunities - Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust

We currently have a number of opportunities available to join our Sodexo Healthcare team at Manchester University NHS Foundation trust as a Porter. There are variety of roles available, including Pool Porters and Linen Porters.

Porters play an invaluable role in supporting the day-to-day running of the hospital, delivering a quality portering service to all patients, staff (medical and non medical) and visitors to the hospital. This is a great opportunity for a customer focused individual to join a world leading food and facilities management company

Role Responsibility

  • Transfer patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via means of walking, wheelchair, trolley, or beds
  • Attend medical emergencies including cardiac arrests with the resus trolley / bag
  • Ensure wheelchairs and trolleys are kept clean to minimise the risks of infection to patients and staff, in line with the Infection Control Policy
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the Porters lodge at all times
  • Ensure the cleanliness of the waste areas at all times
  • Undertake any other necessary duties to ensure maintenance of an efficient Portering Service as directed by your duty manager or helpdesk dispatcher
  • Undertake scheduled/routine and ad hoc tasks as detailed below:
  • Empty bins/waste containers of various site-segregated recyclable waste streams, located within departments and public areas within the Trust, including some outdoor areas (e.g. chewing gum bins)
  • Transport collected recycling streams to bulk storage areas (waste yard), ensuring streams are appropriately segregated as per procedure , and waste is secure during transport and once in store
  • Ensure all waste streams are correctly disposed of at waste yard
  • Undertake daily, scheduled and ad hoc cleaning of bins in departments and public locations, as required, including spills, splashes or litter in the immediate location of the bins. Replace bin   liners, where used
  • Receive, distribute and install goods and equipment relating to recycling, as required e.g. set up bins in new locations, or provide departments with recycling containers. Maintain an audit trail of deliveries, if required
  • Report damaged bins, undertaking small repairs to bins and other equipment, if appropriate, using a range of simple hand tools (spanners / screwdrivers)
  • Operate waste handling plant and equipment and power-cleaning equipment
  • Drive electric tugs, towing trains of bins and trailers in external areas, within the site boundaries. Use “Master mover” type hand held electric towing device
  • Undertake routine daily checks of electric tugs and waste handling equipment ensuring operational fitness, reporting any faults to the Waste Team Leader
  • Undertake cleaning or wheelie bins and other waste storage containers as required
  • Support in keeping waste storage areas and yard in a clean and tidy condition
