Instructor (Catering) – Vocational/Practical Skills

Job Introduction

The c30-strong Activities Department caters for a wide range of educational and vocational needs for the 700 prisoners.  The Instructor Team focus on delivering vocational training including cleaning, catering and construction courses.  Reporting to the VT Team Leader the role is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measure. 

This role will specifically focus on Catering, the ideal candidate will have experience of working within a catering and/or kitchen environment and will have a Food Hygiene certificate. Experience of working within a classroom environment would also be an advantage.

Please note the successful applicant will be required to complete a 9 week mandatory training course for a PCO Badge (if not already badged). Evening and weekend work will be required.

Role Responsibility

  • Plan courses and programmes to cater for varying levels of knowledge and aptitudes within the prisoner population, with the focus being on catering or hospitality
  • Deliver absorbing lesson plans to engage and retain prisoner attention and attendance
  • Report on prisoner progress and collaborate with colleagues to improve sentence management, increase vocational skills and prepare prisoners for release 
  • Encourage, support and sustain prisoners seeking to broaden their life and practical skills
  • Ensure compliance with relevant teaching, quality assurance and testing/assessment guidelines

The Ideal Candidate

  • We need Instructors with previous experience in a training environment – particularly in the Catering / Hospitality industry.   We will also consider PCOs with strong practical skills with a desire to earn a learning accreditation.
  • Strong organisational skills – both in terms of people and materials
  • Evidence of the ability to build relationships across the classroom, department and prison as a whole

    Personality and attitude are at least as important as experience however and, whilst we need to see that an Instructor has the relevant learning and development qualifications, we are prepared to work with exceptional candidates to help the achieve the required accreditations within a reasonable timeframe of 9 months of starting in the role.

    Vocational Instructors will be required to achieve Prisoner Custody Officer accreditation – this requires paid attendance at a 9-week intensive training course

Package Description

£22,113pa - to £23,218pa plus excellent benefits (including free meals and parking, group discount schemes and pension with 28 days holiday)

Evening and weekend work will be required
