Job Introduction
HMP Lowdham Grange are currently recruiting for an Instructional officer in Textile machine operations to join our team of machinists/instructors in providing supervision, knowledge and skills to prisoners in a specialist textiles production workshop to improve their employment prospects on release with a view to reducing reoffending. Between our team there is in excess of 60 years knowledge of sewing/production, we have expanded our sewing capacity to 4 workshops and doubled our original capacity due to a full order book.
The person we require would ideally have been a sewing machinist who can pass on their skills in manufacturing one or more of the following: underwear, leisurewear, outerwear, corporate wear, or upholstery. In our workshops we manufacture, sweatshirt tops and bottoms, tee shirts, boxer shorts, bedding, i.e. duvet covers, fitted sheets, pillow cases, curtains, pillows, laundry bags various staff products such as staff bags, key pouches, radio pouches and much more. We also manufacture products for outside partner companies.
The duties of this person would be to train inmates in basic sewing skills on lockstitch and overlock machines initially, using a format already in place. You will be required to check quality and production on a rolling basis and keep quality products within the workshop. Your duties within the workshop would be to keep an orderly manner of inmates within their roles within the workshop. Issue out tools and general duties to running a sewing room within a prison and oversee the daily production and workshop.
We would not expect you to come to us with all this knowledge, the successful applicant would be trained and shadowed by a member of our sewing team, until they feel confident in their new roll.

Main Responsibilities
- Instruction and demonstration of sewing machinery operations such as overlock and lockstitch
- Ensure that there is collaborative working between Sodexo and external partner companies/contracts.
- Managing the dual aspects of Security & Control alongside the commercial aspect of a production environment.
- Motivating the prisoner workforce to achieve their personal production and learning targets.
- Induct prisoners and upskill them in all aspects of operating a sewing machine and producing garments.
- Induct prisoners to the workshop/area of work and train them in aspects such as health and safety, Control of Substance Hazardous to health (COSHH), machinery and tools usage.
- Provide support for prisoners where required; tailor learning and training requirements to individual needs.
- Set work schedules and manage targets/quality standards, maintaining delivery of contractual arrangements.
- Assess and evaluate skills of prisoners up to national qualification standards.
- Supervise and maintain discipline of prisoners within workshop/area of work, responsible for performance, motivation, discipline, appraisal and development of prisoners.

The Ideal Candidate
- Will have Sewing machinery experience in an industrial environment (Overlock, Lockstitch)
- Good working knowledge and experience of Textiles is essential
- Be IT literate
- The job holder must be able to fulfil all spoken aspects of the role with confidence
- Be confident and able to challenge poor behaviour in the workshops
