Job Introduction

HMP Addiewell are recruiting for 2 General Instructors - Vocational Trades. The purposeful activities department caters for a wide range of educational and vocational needs for the 700 Residents.  The team focus on delivering courses designed to raise residents self-esteem and employability skills. Reporting to the purposeful activity team leader the role would suit someone with extensive knowledge and experience in delivering various forms of education in a classroom setting. The role is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measure.

Role Responsibility

  • Create positive opportunities for those residents attending purposeful activity and promote benefits of achievement in vocational training
  • Liaise with prison staff and actively recruit new resident students with a particular set of interests attributed to your classroom subjects.
  • Plan vocational courses and programmes to deliver to residents.
  • Set assignments to progress the individual, monitoring, and reviewing these targets against their agreed learning plan.
  • Keep abreast of curricular developments and maintain personal development enhancing your knowledge and skills as an instructor.
  • Provide residents with a structured programme of tuition for class periods and self-study, ensuring that progress information is incorporated into resident records.
  • Encourage, support and sustain residents seeking to broaden their life and practical skills
  • Prepare residents for exams or assessments where appropriate and encourage demonstrable learning    outcomes
  • Help residents utilise their time in the classroom as means of focusing residents on alternative life choices to criminality.
  • Contribute to the preparation of residents who wish to further their vocational training post-release.
  • You will be given the autonomy to create your own teaching experience and learning package for residents

The Ideal Candidate

  • Hold the applicable assessor’s award or achieve the assessor’s award within eighteen months of undertaking the role.
  • SCQF Level 7 in a teaching discipline (or equivalent) or achieve this within eighteen months of undertaking the role.
  • Experience in a range of vocational trade topics to allow residents to explore different career pathways.
  • Experience of working with persons with a range of additional support needs across a range of ages and    stages.
  • We need Instructors with previous experience in a classroom environment or who can demonstrate they have the necessary skills to teach challenging and hard to reach individuals.
  • Demonstrable experience of the SQA framework or of an Industry or Educational Standard.
  • Excellent communication and IT skills.
  • High level of organisational skills.
  • Ability to deliver a range of subjects or courses to learners
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation

Package Description

40 hours per week, Salary £25,000 per annum plus excellent benefits (including free meals and parking, group discount schemes and pension with 28 days holiday)

Hours of work will be Monday to Friday 8am to 4.30pm however may be required to work occasional evenings and weekends.
