We are recruiting for a Deputy Director at HMP Peterborough. Working alongside the Director, you will be responsible for the effective day to day operation of the male side of the prison, as well as helping shape the strategic direction of the prison and more broadly within Sodexo Justice Services and Sodexo.

HMP/YOI Peterborough is the country’s only purpose-built prison for both male and female prisoners (kept separate at all times), including a 12-place mother and baby unit. We are committed to offering education and development programmes to provide residents with the skills required to enter employment on release, so reducing the chances of further offending. Providing creative outlets, such as workshop activities, helps to equip those in custody for when they are released. We use ‘Restorative Approaches’ to bring people in conflict into dialogue. Using a skilled and structured process, those who have been harmed have an opportunity to be heard and those that have caused the harm are held to account for what they have done. We have strong links with the community outside through a variety of partnerships, including our outreach activity Outside Links’ offering support and advice to both residents and their families.

Role Responsibility

  • Take charge of the prison in the Director’s absence, sharing this responsibility with the Deputy Director for the male side. 
  • Oversee operational delivery and support the team to resolve daily challenges 
  • Contribute to the development of policies and procedures for the operation of the prison 
  • Develop the skills and competencies of senior operational managers through support and challenge 
  • Instigate terms of reference for staff investigations, and conducts disciplinary and grievance hearings and appeals in accordance with Sodexo policies and procedures  
  • Oversight of staff deployment on the male side and to lead on staff deployment systems for the whole site  
  • Manage and monitor delivery of key operational projects 
  • Contribute to meeting the prison’s financial targets by remaining within budget

The Ideal Candidate

  • Extensive prison operational management experience at senior management level (functional head or above), including incident management training/ experience.  
  • Ability to work cooperatively with the Director and the female side Deputy Director to form a consistent and cohesive unit operationally leading the prison. 
  • Delivery and results focused, with a clear understanding of the requirements of working in a contractual environment.  
  • A clear and demonstrable understanding of what makes a good leader, the skills required and the ability to motivate and engage others  
  • Ability to manage and develop key stakeholder relationships  
  • A clear and demonstrable understanding of key people management tools and resources  
  • Proven ability to manage change in a structured way  
  • Commercial and financial awareness 

Package Description

£75,600 per annum plus benefits!!!

Post holders will be subjected to an advanced DBS check, a prison security check (level 2) prior to being employed.
