As Team Leader Activities (Core Skills), you will showcase your leadership skills alongside your English and/or Maths teaching experience and qualifications.
You'll lead a team of learning staff in the provision and promotion of quality learning services at HMP Addiewell supporting Prisoners to access the curriculum and develop their capacity to succeed in life.
You will develop and deliver a range of qualifications whilst assessing and verifying against the recognised national standards, raising Prisoner attainment promoting achievement and inclusion.
Role Responsibility
Lead, coach and develop learning staff to promote the values and vision of Sodexo Justice Services.
Use the full range of staff engagement tools such as PDR, group and 1:1 coaching sessions as well as team meetings/briefings to maintain a positive and progressive working environment for all.
Develop lesson plans and deliver programs as directed to national standards and maintain appropriate safety for Prisoners within the learning area.
To be involved in all processes and procedures related to marketing, inducting and tracking of class attendance; notifying potential impact upon PA uptake as appropriate.
Ensure learner retention is at the highest possible levels.
To lead Prisoners learning at a variety of stages by preparing learning experiences for Prisoners; assessing, and carry out internal verification functions, recording and reporting of Prisoner progress
Develop and making use of a variety of methods and resources in the teaching of Prisoners.
Develop the Prison curriculum by setting and maintaining appropriate standards of work and presentation
To maintain a thorough working knowledge of Scottish and SQA curriculum guidance and associated quality indicators.
Deliver courses which lead to presentation for SQA examinations/moderation including Intermediate 1/2 and Higher levels. Prepare Prisoners for examinations/assessments and assisting with their administration.
The Ideal Candidate
- Proven experience in an educational /training environment.
- Experiential understanding in practical applications of Scottish Learning Frameworks.
- Creative and innovative techniques in programme delivery within a broad curriculum.
- Excellent communication and IT skills.

Qualifications – appropriate Learning & Development or teaching qualification to SCQF level 8/9.
Teaching Experience – Ability to teach at a range of levels working with Prisoners who may have some additional support needs to those interested in studying to higher levels.
Evidence of sound classroom management skills and an ability to motivate Prisoners. Able to prioritise and maintain accurate records.
Relationships with Prisoners – Ability to plan coherent teaching programmes in line with Prison regime, prisoner need and in the context of Scottish learning frameworks.
Communication Skills - Ability to teach in a clear and stimulating manner
Resource Allocation – ability to order and manage stock levels and resources, ability to coordinate tasks for the Unit whilst providing a comfortable training environment for Prisoners.
Personal, Professional Skills – Committed to a Pro Social model, ability to adapt to a Prison environment, participative and supportive.
*The hours of work will require flexibility over 37.5 hours with the possibility of occasional evening and/or weekend work. This would be prior agreed and arranged with the Line Manager and not expected as a routine.
The postholder may be required to be Prisoner Custody Officer badged at the time of application or as a condition of acceptance of the role, be prepared to train as a Prisoner Custody Officer. This will involve the passing of a fitness test prior to interview.
