Chef - Lead with Passion, Cook with Purpose!

Location: Shrewsbury School, The Schools, Shrewsbury, SY3 7BA

Salary: £13.94 per hour
Hours: 40 hours per week
Working Pattern: 5 days out of 7 (7am-3pm or 12-8pm)

As a Chef for Sodexo, you'll be a representative for Independents by Sodexo and Shrewsbury school, a leading independent school for pupils 13-18 years.   We offer a top-class facility serving approximately 2200 pupils and staff with 3 meals a day, 7 days per week. You'll assist the craft team in delivering the prompt and efficient preparation and service of all meals to the company’ standard and client satisfaction within agreed annual budget.

What You’ll Do:

  • Produce, as directed, with all aspects of preparation and presentation of the food at the required times and to the Company’s standard and ensure that appropriate methods of cooking and presentation are used to maintain the highest standards of production and service.

  • Ensure that all goods are quickly and correctly stored away on rotation system, having checked as per delivery procedures in place. (HACCP procedures)

  • Direct staff as required to ensure operational task are completed safely, timely and compliantly.

  • Ensure all work areas and surfaces are clean and tidy as is practicable at all times, especially at the end of the day.

  • To serve customers in a quick, polite manner always ensuring good customer service

  • Replenish food and equipment to ensure an efficient and seamless service, ensure freshness, flavour and presentation.

  • Complete any administration as requested including food temperatures, cleaning schedules, delivery temperatures, stock takes, allergen information.

  • Ensure that all food is prepared with due care and attention, particularly regarding special dietary requirements, allergens and shelf life.

  • Ensure the kitchen is maintained in a clean, organized manner and all food safety and health and safety policies and procedures are followed.

  • Promote a friendly working relationship with colleagues.

  • Undertake training and comply with all company policies and procedures some of which may be through the online portal Ingenium.

  • Assist in succession planning for the catering craft team, assistants and Kitchen porter

  • Raise any issues to the Head Chef and Manager in a timely manner

  • Work at school events, as required, which may include evening and weekend work.

  • Assist with the setup, service, clearing and cleaning of function catering as requested

What You Bring:

Essential:

  • Experience cooking on a large scale (1000–2200 students)

  • 2 years industry experience following recipes in a professional kitchen

  • Strong knowledge of fresh produce and ingredient preparation

  • Understanding of health and safety regulations and the ability to enforce them

  • Ability to work under pressure in a busy kitchen environment

  • Positive leadership, professionalism, and a passion for food

  • Hold basic food handling certifications, including:

    • NVQ Level 2 or equivalent

    • Level 2 Food Safety Certificate

  • Health & Safety IOSH or equivalent – Desirable
