As an Apprentice Building Services Maintenance Engineer , you’ll work alongside our experienced engineers to learn how we maintain, repair, and improve the mechanical systems that keep university buildings running safely and efficiently.
What You'll Do:
Support planned and reactive mechanical maintenance (PPM and repairs) across campus facilities
Learn to diagnose faults, carry out basic repairs, and use mechanical tools and equipment safely
Assist in statutory compliance checks, including water safety, pressure systems, LOLER and other regulatory requirements
Gain experience with HVAC systems, plumbing, plant rooms and technical equipment
Help respond to work orders, maintenance requests and service queries
Participate in audits, inspections and risk assessments
Keep accurate maintenance records to support compliance and apprenticeship progress
Engage fully with your apprenticeship programme, completing assignments, training and assessments
Develop strong communication and teamwork skills while working with colleagues, contractors and clients
This is a hands-on role in a busy, safety-critical environment, perfect for someone who enjoys practical learning and real responsibility from day one.

Knowledge & Experience:
An interest in mechanical engineering or practical/technical work (desirable)
Awareness of health & safety expectations in the workplace
Basic IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook)
No previous mechanical experience required—full training provided
Qualifications:
GCSE (or equivalent) Maths and English at grade 4/C or above – essential
Commitment to completing a Level 3 FM Apprenticeship – essential
What you’ll achieve
By the end of your apprenticeship, you will have:
A nationally recognised Level 3 qualification in Building services engineering service and maintenance engineer
Hands-on experience across HVAC, plumbing, plant and mechanical systems
A strong understanding of safety, compliance and engineering best practice
The confidence to diagnose, repair and support mechanical maintenance independently
A solid foundation for a successful future career in engineering or facilities management
