Job Introduction

Role Responsibility

Job Purpose

1. To provide a transport service to meet the needs of the wards and departments and to ensure that patients, materials and equipment are safely and appropriately transferred around the hospital
2. To direct patients, staff and visitors to all areas of the hospital
3. To provide a visible presence around the site, ensuring that the main tasks listed below are carried out.

4. Security

5. Regular patrols to take place within the site to ensure that all area’s that were secured earlier have remained locked and no visible signs of break in.
6. Check car park areas around the site.
7. Visible presence in the treatment area off A/E  to reassure the staff and patients
8. Complete daily occurrence reports. Fill in all incident reports for client detailing incidents
9. Ability to deal with the physical effort required to regularly walk around site.
10. To provide an immediate response to clinical staff when requested.

     

    Patient Related Tasks

11. Ability to deal with and be able to respond to security issues, e.g. assaults on staff, security incidents, thefts from staff, patients and/or visitors
12.   Ability to deal with occasional exposure to physical and verbal aggression
13. To transfer patients in a safe and appropriate manner to and from the wards and departments via means of walking, wheelchair, stretcher or beds
14. To convey blood specimens in a safe manner from wards/departments to Pathology department.
15. Conveyance of patient notes and x-rays to and from wards/departments
16. Removal of deceased bodies from wards/departments to the mortuary in a safe and dignified manner
17. To replace gasses where necessary on wards/departments for the requirements of patients.
18. To assist in the transfer of seriously injured patients from the helicopter to the A & E department
19. To use the designated blood tracking system.
20. To help distribute drugs from pharmacy to wards/departments.
21. Assisting patients to be pat slid across from trolleys to the bed with assistance from the nursing staff
22. To attend cardiac arrests with the resus trolley
23. To assist staff on the day case unit to transport patients to and from wards
24. To assist new starter induction’s on the “buddy” programme

    Equipment and Material Related Tasks

26. Ensure bleep, mobile phone and radio are in full working order and report any defects immediately.
27. All communication equipment used in the correct manner.
28. Remove equipment from wards/departments as required by the portering Manager or Charghands
29. To re-stock oxygen banks as required
30. Delivery of supplies to all wards
31. Collection and delivery of post
32. Ensure wheelchairs and trolleys are kept clean and report any defects immediately
33. Use radios to communicate with the Helpdesk, Chargehand in the correct manner
34. Any other duties as deemed appropriate by the line manager

    Emergency Fire Instructions

36. Meet fire crew at Main Entrance, and direct to the appropriate entrance nearest the fire situation
37. Proceed to the lifts. Ensure no one is trapped, if there is report to the Fire Brigade. Immobilise to prevent use during the fire incident

     

38. Driving

39. To complete weekly vehicle inspection forms
40. To ensure vehicles are kept clean and tidy and are cleaned inside and out on a weekly basis
41. Report any defects or concerns regarding the vehicle immediately

The Ideal Candidate

Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Essential

1. SIA Guarding/door licence
2. Written and verbal communication skills
3. Ability to write reports in a clear and structured manner
4. Empathy with patients and visitors
5. Ability to follow instruction
6. Effective communication and customer care skills
7. High standards of personal hygiene
8. Ability to work independently and as part of a team
9. Ability to deal with stressful situations.
10. Manual Handling training
11. Basic literacy skills.

Package Description

35 hours per week

Weekend enhancements for Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays

Must be SIA Licenced and hold a clean driving license

Healthcare awareness preferred but not compulsory as training will be given. Some portering duties involved car parking patrol, specimens collections, patient tranfers

10 hours shifts, 20:00-06:00, 4 on 4 off shifts
