Prison Director - HMP Addiewell

Job Introduction

Do you have extensive senior operational management experience in prisons, at Governor In Charge/ Prison Director level? Are you passionate about rehabilitation and improving offenders and employees quality of life? Do you have strong strategic management and leadership skills?

Sodexo are currently recruiting for a Prison Director at HMP Addiewell

You will be required to provide an operationally safe, decent and secure custodial environment which meets the needs of prisoners and promotes improved quality of life and opportunities to reduce re-offending.  You will provide strategic and operational leadership for the prison, communicating the vision for the organisation through high levels of visibility, staff engagement and value based leadership. You must also deliver the business and contractual requirements of the prison, having responsibility for financial performance and quality of services.

HMP Addiewell accommodates up to 796 prisoners, mainly from the Lanarkshire and West Lothian areas. It is a complex prison prison, with a population comprising all levels of security and all ranges of sentence length and remand prisoners. As a “learning prison”, we work towards the resettlement of residents upon their release into the community and their integration into society through the skills and qualifications acquired while in our care. Role Responsibility

  • Set and maintain the strategic direction of the prison in the context of Sodexo strategy and the commissioning expectations of the Scottish Prison Service
  • Deliver the agreed performance levels, service specifications and contractual targets on time and within budget, working closely with the Scottish PrisonService contract management team.
  • Ensure the identification, management and review of organisational risk (operational, financial, reputational and people)
  • Develop and sustain a culture that attracts, engages, motivates and retains high quality staff to foster a work environment where hard work, innovation and creativity are encouraged and valued. Ensure effective workforce and succession planning.
  • Lead on opportunities for strategic collaboration with other key stakeholders and partners at national, regional and local level promoting the profile and best interests of the prison, SJS and the wider Sodexo.
  • Provide direct line management for designated members of the Senior Management Team and matrix management.
  • Act as Silver commander for the prison during any operational incidents.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • A solid track record as a substantive Prison Governor In Charge /Prison Director (not less than one year).
  • Previous prison incident command experience and risk management
  • Proven leadership skills, including the development, communication and delivery of vision.
  • Technical knowledge of relevant prison legislation, SPS Instructions, Standards, inspection and audit processes; and knowledge of the wider criminal justice system.
  • Successful completion of incident and hostage management training.
  • Financial management experience, including responsibility for large budgets, and proven ability to achieve efficiencies.
  • Strategic thinking, understanding policy and legal context, to make meaningful decisions in complex and challenging situations.
  • Proven ability to develop mature, productive and meaningful relationships with internal and external service providers, key stakeholders and partners
  • Effective communicator, including the proven ability to negotiate and influence at a strategic level.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgement in politicised and pressured environment.
  • Operational contract knowledge and contract management skills.
  • Proven skills in promoting and delivering business growth.
  • Experience of being the public face of a large organisation and conducting public speeches and media presentations in a politically sensitive environment.

Desirable

  • Project Management skills.
