Job Introduction

HMP Peterborough is the first purpose-built prison in the UK to house both men and women on the same site.

This highly innovative prison is designed to a high standard of physical security. Sodexo Justice Services has ensured that the prison provides needs-based personal development services for both men and women.  January 2015 saw the completion of a new houseblock on the male estate which can house an additional 292 residents, along with an educational activities building.

Our work aims to facilitate offenders’ reintegration into the community, through the provision of education, employment and resettlement opportunities.

 

The Learning, Skills and Employment function sits at the very heart of the prison and the Education team focus on delivering focus on delivering vocational training including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and construction courses (amongst others) that will enable the prisoners to gain skills and competencies that will assist them to return into the community without re-offending.  We now seek to add  further Multi-Skill Instructors to the team as a result of increased investment.

Role Responsibility

Reporting to the Learning Manager the role is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measure.  Key responsibilities include:

  • Plan courses and programmes (including carpentry, plumbing, electrical and construction courses)  to allow for varying levels of knowledge and aptitudes within the prisoner population
  • Deliver absorbing lesson plans to engage and retain prisoner attention and attendance
  • Report on prisoner progress and collaborate with colleagues to improve sentence management, increase skills and prepare prisoners for release
  • Encourage, support and sustain prisoners seeking to broaden their carpentry, plumbing, electrical and construction skills
  • Ensure compliance with relevant teaching, quality assurance and testing/assessment guidelines

The Ideal Candidate

  • Level 3 in carpentry, plumbing, electrical or construction qualification. 
  • Previous experience in training environment – either in education or industry.
  • Strong organisational skills – both in terms of people and materials
  • Evidence of the ability to build relationships across the classroom, department and prison

Highly Desirable

  • Ideally a full teaching qualification – PGDE, KTTLS if not PTLLS
  • An  Assessor or Internal verifier qualification would also be highly desirable

Personality and attitude are also as important as experience.  However, whilst we need to see that an Instructor has started to gain the relevant learning and development qualifications, we are prepared to work with exceptional candidates to help the achieve the required accreditations within a reasonable timeframe.

Package Description

£23,914.97 - £26,649.95 dependant on qualifications plus excellent benefits including free on duty meals and onsite parking, group discount schemes and pension with up to 28 days holiday
