HMP Addiewell is a learning prison, with a strong and concerted focus on learning not to reoffend, relevant skills training and employability and we work with all areas of the wider community to ensure prisoners have the best possible chance of leading positive lives following release. Addiewell opened in 2008 and has become an integral part of the Scottish Prison Service estate earning much praise from (amongst others) HMCIP, for its innovation, use of technology, strong partnership working as well as its “can do” culture.

 

The c30-strong Learning & Activities Department caters for a wide range of educational and vocational needs for the 700 prisoners.  The Employability Skills Instructor will focus on delivering lessons to enhance employment opportunities for prisoners on release.  Reporting to the Employability & Lifeskills Manager the role is diverse, thought-provoking and challenging/rewarding in equal measure.

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure prisoners are equipped with the necessary tools on liberation to apply for gainful employment i.e. CV, Cover Letter, References
  • Plan and deliver programs as directed and maintain appropriate safety for Prisoners within the learning area.
  • Contribute to all processes and procedures related to marketing, inducting and tracking of class attendance;
  • Motivate and drive Prisoners to achieve their goals within agreed timescales, through direct support and assistance.
  • Provide regular feedback to prisoners and give group and individual support to enable them to achieve the maximum learning benefit.
  • Ensure learner retention is at the highest possible levels.

 

The Ideal Candidate

  • Proven experience in a training environment
  • Demonstrable experience of the SQA framework or of an Industry or Educational Standard.
  • Excellent communication and IT skills.
  • High level of organisational skills.
  • A relevant teaching qualification, or committment to work towards
  • Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation.

 

Desirable

  • Qualifications – appropriate Learning & Development qualification up to SCQF level 7.
  • Teaching Experience – must be able to support Prisoners at a range of levels including those with only functional literacies skills to subsequently achieve qualifications maintaining accurate records of achievements.
  • Relationships with Prisoners – Must be able to act as Instructor and Assessor seamlessly, adhering to Prison procedures pertaining to safety, security and the welfare of self and others.
  • Communication Skills - Ability to teach in a clear and stimulating manner
  • Resource Allocation - Ability to make use of a variety of resources and to use them to create a variety of learning experiences for Prisoners.
  • Personal, Professional Skills – Committed to a Pro Social model, ability to adapt to a Prison environment, participative and supportive
