Induction Tutor (Custodial)

HMP Peterborough is the first purpose-built prison in the UK to house both men and women on the same site. This highly innovative prison is designed to a high standard of physical security. Sodexo Justice Services has ensured that the prison provides needs-based personal development services for both men and women. January 2015 saw the completion of a new houseblock on the male estate which can house an additional 292 residents, along with an educational activities building.
Our work aims to facilitate offenders’ reintegration into the community, through the provision of education, employment and resettlement opportunities.
As Induction Tutor, you will play a key role in support distance learning, working with the Induction and Distance Learning Coordinator.
You’ll work with other members of the education and regime delivery teams to promote and provide a broad range of relevant educational programmes for both male and female prisoners, developing the curriculum and learning materials and to deliver and assess accredited learning programmes.
The focus of the team is to provide educational opportunities that will enable the prisoners to gain skills and competencies that will assist them to return into the community without re-offending
You’ll work with all members of the broader prison to ensure the effective delivery of an Induction programme for both male and female prisoners
Role Responsibility
- Work effectively and efficiently within Learning, Skills & Employment to deliver Induction to both the male and female estates as appropriate including individual Inductions
- Complete an initial assessment and utilise results to best advise prisoners and complete Individual Learning Plans
- Accurately advise prisoners about educational/ learning activities
- Complete all necessary administrative duties with relevant information including, updating Induction information, SEN spreadsheets etc
- Monitor Induction attendance and use effective strategies to resolve poor attendance
- Invigilate exams when necessary
- Undertake store visits to ensure that refreshments are always available for prisoners during break times
- Work closely with Education team members and across prison, i.e. sentence planning, allocations and wing staff as required to ensure development and advancement of Induction
The Ideal Candidate
- Experience of delivering to learners
- Knowledge of Education within a prison environment
- An interest in learning and skills as a tool for rehabilitation
- An ability to communicate effectively at all times to learners and staff
- First Aid qualification or a willingness to work towards
Desirable
- Teaching or training qualification or a willingness to work towards
- NVQ L3 Information, Advice & Guidance
- Willingness to undertake additional duties which will support colleagues and your ability to perform effectively within this post
- An ability to develop systems to ensure efficient running of the service and department
