HMP Peterborough is the first purpose-built prison in the UK to house both men and women on the same site.  This highly innovative prison is designed to a high standard of physical security. Sodexo Justice Services has ensured that the prison provides needs-based personal development services for both men and women.  January 2015 saw the completion of a new houseblock on the male estate which can house an additional 292 residents, along with an educational activities building.

Our work aims to facilitate offenders’ reintegration into the community, through the provision of education, employment and resettlement opportunities.

You will provide learners in the Education Department support and tuition to increase their levels of Functional Skills, Literacy and Numeracy through accredited programmes.

Working with other members of the Education team to deliver and assess all levels of skills through a structured educational programme for both male and female prisoners, adhering to the focus of the team in providing educational opportunities that will enable the prisoners to gain skills and competencies which will assist them to return into the community without re-offending.

Role Responsibility

  • Work effectively and efficiently with the education and regime delivery teams to produce innovative and stimulating Functional Skills, literacy and numeracy, lessons for prisoners to encourage participation whatever level the prisoners are starting from
  • Effectively plan courses and lessons by preparing and using schemes of work and lesson plans for all classes to ensure effective, differentiated delivery and for evidence of successful lessons for inspection/ lesson observations
  • Identify individual and group learning needs and develop differentiated teaching methods and resources accordingly
  • Work closely with Allocations to monitor take-up of taught courses and employ strategies to increase take-up to ensure maximum attendance in your class at all times
  • Monitor and address concerns regarding attendance, achievement and progression
  • Record and analyse class and learner data to ensure concerns are addressed quickly and efficiently
  • Attend team meetings to evaluate progress and promote good practice and attend all staff meetings, which will include giving feedback on classes and ideas to develop teaching practices and the Department generally
  • Establish a rapport with prisoners to encourage them to take pregressive steps in learning and achieve a recognised qualification
  • Comply with all assessment recording and reporting systems to ensure that qualification are completed and awarded in good time
  • Assist in any marketing strategies related to education courses within normal work hours and out of normal work hours
  • Meet agreed prison targets which will be identified in your PDR and reviewed regularly throughout the year

The Ideal Candidate

  • Full teaching qualification (minimum of CTLLS)
  • Experience of teaching in a classroom environment and 1:1 environment
  • Recognised Level 3 qualification or above in Maths and English
  • Hve an interest in the rehabilitation and resettlement of offenders
  • An ability to communicate effectively at all times through different mediums, including spoken and written communication.

Desirable

  • Experience of delivering Functional Skills
  • Hold a recognised Assessor or IV qualification - must have a willingness to work towards these qualifications.

Package Description

£23,914.97 - £26,649.95 plus benefits including 224 hours holiday (inclusive of bank holidays), discounted health cover, subsidised gym membership, childcare voucher scheme, free meals on duty and free on-site parking
