Engineering Instructor - Welding

HMP Northumberland is the newest addition to the SJS estate.  Our aim is to introduce the technology and initiatives that have been so successful in our other prisons whilst providing real work opportunities for prisoners which match those available in the community

Following the successful win of a new contract with a leading manufacturer, we are seeking an experienced Welder with supervisory skill set to work alongside the existing Engineering Instructor in leading and supporting prisoners to develop the required level of skills and output in industrial/Engineering workshops, which will enhance the commercial development of the working prison contract.

Role Responsibility

  • Ensure that prisoners produce the required levels and quality of output and that all staff and prisoners employed are properly trained for the task they are to perform and ensure that records of that training are maintained.
  • Play an active role in the training process for their own and prisoner development.
  • Confirm prisoner attendance at work in hours for each session and confirm prisoner pay
  • Maintain stock levels in accordance with the agreed budget and resource requirements.
  • Ensure that the Company’s Health and Safety Policy is properly and effectively implemented in each workshop.
  • Ensure that all equipment is used, maintained and repaired in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and that the physical security and cleanliness of the workshops is up to standards
  • Ensure the supervision and general well being of those employees and prisoners located within the workshop
  • Apply and support the Company Policy for the prevention of injury and damage.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential

  • Technical skills relevant to role, with time served/qualifications related to fabrication, particularly MIG/TIG welding
  • Proven delivery of product in industries related to welding and metal fabrication
  • High level of interpersonal skills with the ability to challenge inappropriate behaviour..
  • Supervisory experience
  • Good team player who demonstrates  initiative, is motivated.with confidence, assertiveness and a positive attitude

Desirable

  • Good IT skills.
  • Performance analysis skills
  • Good written/report writing skills

£21,000-£22.500 plus benefits
